How does it work?

Chatbots process the orders, answer frequently asked questions, help with purchasing, analyze data and provide its results to a host. For example, Amazon has increased the total sales volume by 35%, and Alibaba has grown its conversion coefficient by 20% thanks to chatbots. Google has recently announced an AI chatbot — Duplex. It is an assistant understanding context and nuances of human conversation. Its goal is to cover routine tasks like restaurant booking.

What chatbots do we have in Ukraine?

Civil servant Taras helps to fill in the e-declaration, Metinvest’s chatbot tells you about the metallurgy, Patentbot helps with trademark application filing, Paypbbot is a card-to-card remittance in Telegram, FUIB’s chatbot allows to open a credit or a deposit, recharge your mobile, find our exchange rate.

So, one day they will be everywhere, won’t they?

Why should we mine minerals on asteroids?

According to the World Bureau of Metal Statistics, we will face Earth metal deposit shortage until 2030. When it happens we will extract them in the space — asteroids are full of metals, such as platinum, cobalt, gold, manganese, nickel, palladium, ruthenium etc.

Does anyone already mine minerals on asteroids?

Not yet. But, since the early ХХІ century, more than 80 companies were engaged in outer space exploration, including probable mineral mining projects. In general, they have received $13,3 bln of investments. Planetary Resources and Deep Space Industries are the biggest space mining companies.

The US and Luxembourg authorized private companies to mine minerals on asteroids.

Is it relevant?

One half-kilometre asteroid deposits can cost from $300 bln to $5 tln. In the long term, resources from asteroids will reduce outer space exploration costs by 95%.

For mining purposes, asteroids will be pulled to the Moon, where minerals will be extracted and processed.

So, when to expect platinum from the space?

Planetary Resources forecasts that the first asteroid will be mined in 10 years. The first mission exploring space mining potential has to be launched in 2020.

Insure the house against smart house system malfunction

How does smart house look like?

A smart house is full of different sensors and devices: cameras, motion and voice recognition detectors, temperature sensors etc. All these devices are connected and interact with each other. And it makes our life easier.

What can it actually do?

A smart house can properly react on emergencies, for example: shut down the water in case of pipe bursting or call the police if a criminal has broken into your house.

It can also easily deal with everyday tasks: close or open entrance door, order a meal if a fridge is empty, or launch robot vacuum when everyone leaves.

How many smart houses do we have now?

As of 2016, there were 30 million smart houses in the US and EU, according to Berg Insight. GfK says, 36% of millennials around the world live in smart houses today.

Why should we introduce technologies in food production?

According to the UN, world population is expected to reach 10 billion in 2050, at the same time, the level of consumption will increase by 70% comparing to now. Thus, the growing demand for food and primary products cannot be satisfied without innovations in food production.

What exact innovations are we talking about?

First of all, we talk about the robots providing automation of production. They are used for tillage, irrigation, cattle feeding, grazing and other purposes.

With the help of cameras, robots can detect and cut weeds, whether by saw or by laser without harming a plant. They are able to set and tend plants. Some robots are used for apple, grape, strawberry, bilberry, salad and pepper harvesting.

What are the robot-over-human advantages?

They can carry on the same job, but better. Its maintenance is cheaper. Robots work without a break, they are more accurate and eco-friendly (e.g., autonomous plant watering robots use less chemicals).

Are there any agro-robots in Ukraine?

Yes, there are currently 70 startups in Ukraine, developing innovations for agriculture, mostly drones for different purposes. Kray Technologies, Deviro, Mega Drone, Aero Drone, Matrix UAV, ITEC, Ukr Spec Systems, Agrieye create drones which are well-known abroad.

Study results of AI usage in retail

How does AI work in retail?

According to KPMG, customer purchasing experience influences the loyalty to your brand the most. Thus, companies use AI to better understand clients’ behaviour and preferences or foresee their needs. AI is also used to optimize supply by forecasting sales volume and market trends.

So, what do we — ordinary people — get?

The result of AI usage is a comfort shopping. For example, you take a picture of shoes you like. The system recognizes the model and manufacturer of the shoes. Then AI finds the best offers and shows the nearest shop. In a shop, it may recommend you a costume that suits the shoes you like.

Sounds great, any examples?

Dozens of start-ups create products with AI. For example, Cortexica app recognizes products visually with an accuracy of 95%. Meanwhile, Vue.ai algorithm allows personalizing web-pages according to the clients’ preferences. It increases the number of product views by 44% and the number of orders by 10%.

Looks like AI will become a mainstream soon

That’s true. According to Gartner, 200 biggest companies will use AI in 2018. 80% of top-marketing managers believe, in the estimation of Demandbase, that AI will totally change the retail industry until 2020.

Choose a reliable bank for deposits

Is it difficult to choose a reliable bank?

Turned out that for millions of Ukrainians it really is. During 2013-2017 the number of Ukrainian banks decreased by half. A half of banks happened to be “pocket” ones. It means that a bank took money from the depositors and credited the owner’s entities. Those credits were not cancelled, the bank was liquidated, thus depositors lost their money.

How to avoid such a trouble?

Pay attention to bank’s liquidity. It shows readiness of bank to pay your deposit back. Banks have to keep a certain percentage of money for such purposes. The higher percentage, the more reliable bank is.

It also important whether bank effective or not. So, look at its operating profit. This indicator will tell you, how good bank at money raising, even in tough times. It also reveals how the bank actually earns money.

It’s too complicated! How can I choose a reliable bank without these indicators?

Check the bank’s rating and age. The longer the bank exists at the market, the higher possibility, that it is able to overcome a crisis, since it already has a great experience of how to do it, like it was in 2004, 2008, 2014-2015.

A bank has to be transparent. The information about its shareholders and financial statements must be available to the publicity. Bank services must be easy-to-use, including its internet and mobile banking, ATMs, loyalty programmes etc.

Choose baby’s temper and sex

Am I really able to design my future kid?

Theoretically, yes. In the judgment of Ronald Green, Prof. of bioethics in Dartmouth College in New-Hampshire, you will be able to improve the way your baby looks like, his or her athletic and intellectual abilities by gene editing in 40-50 years.

How will it work?

For now, scientists can manipulate human genome just to cure certain hereditary diseases. They use a technology called CRISPR/Cas9 to fix “broken” genome. It allows to cut the “wrong” part of a gene off and replace it with the “correct” one without breaking gene integrity.

In 2017, American and South Korean scientists have removed the DNA causing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy from the human embryo. For the first time, the experiment was successful and caused no further unplanned changes in the genome of the embryo.

Why can’t we design babies in the same way?

Since individual characteristics like eye colour or temper are the sum of multiple mutations in the genome, it is difficult not only to spot these mutations but change it without side effects. For this reason, we can cure only “simple” gene diseases, which are well-studied.

Are we ready for this?

People are suspicious of designer babies. According to Pew Research, nearly a half of the Americans are fine with gene editing to reduce the risks of serious diseases. Meanwhile, 83% of Americans are totally against making babies smarter with the help of gene manipulation.

It’s about time to fix solar battery!!!

Why is energy storage a problem?

Keeping enough amount of energy is difficult and expensive. Despite the large variety of how to do it, the current power capacity of storages is not enough for sustaining the work of power grids.

Why should we keep it at all?

The point is that the power created by renewable sources depends on the weather. Thus, making the electricity supply regular requires the large energy storages.

How much energy can we store now?

Progress in this sphere has already been done. Tesla has built a giant battery in Australia — Powerpack with the power capacity of 100 MW. It is enough to power 30,000 houses for 1 hour. The RES company designs the energy storage with the power capacity of 200 MW.

How much energy will we store in the future?

In 2050 the total power capacity of energy storage in the world will reach 3000 GW.
